Dave's Beauty Shop
Dave Working Miracles
Dave's Beauty Shop is a popular place and all day long a string of older ladies take their turn in Dave's chair.
Grocery Shopper
A short trip to the Cala Foods Grocery store set this woman up to relax while waiting for her turn at the shampoo bowl. Her shopping was done and the big brown grocery bag was at her side. She had booked Dave's last appointment of the day so that Dave would drive her home after he styled her hair. The man wouldn't tell these ladies, "No". He was a good-hearted fellow that probably was taken advantage of, but he truly enjoyed being helpful to someone who needed it.
Yankee Magazine
I am certain this lady brought her own Yankee Magazine in her handbag. This was was not usually found among the well-worn Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Star and Enquirer periodicals that cascaded from the coffee table. Her hair was already dry and she was patiently awaiting her turn to be combed-out.
Cosmo Gal
There she sat. Think of it. A full 45 minutes alone with the Cosmopolitan Magazine---one of those very magazines that I would slip my drawing book into so it would be hidden from the view of the ladies I sketched. I was one of them
Ready for the Drier
The curlers all in place, this lady is ready to take some time under the drier.
Going To Lunch
Oh, I just know this lady was going to meet some of her friends for lunch. Her makeup was impeccable, the comb-out was finished, and she seemed to like the way she looked. She carried her earrings and necklace in her purse and put them on right after Dave blasted her with a hurricane of hair spray. Yes, I do think she had a special function to attend. Not all the ladies left with the finished look from head to toe. Most of them were just finished on the head when Dave got through and didn't seem to be concerned about the rest of their appearance.
Next Customer
On busy days in the Beauty Parlor the customers frequently will have a brief wait. This lady was awaiting her turn.
Modern Art
Dressed for comfort, with bare feet and sandals, this relaxed woman used her time under the hair dryer reading a Modern Art magazine. I am reasonably certain she brought this magazine from her home to supplement the worn periodicals on the coffee table in the Beauty Shop..
The Comb-out
After a shampoo and 45 minutes under the dryer this lady is almost ready to send out the door as soon as Dave tames that hank of hair that has been back-combed to a point it stands by itself. Most of the customers in this shop were over 60 years old and I observed ladies of this age dress any darned way they want. A majority dress for comfort, not for style. They were certainly not dressing to impress Dave or each other. This individuality made them very interesting indeed to a sketch artist
Getting a Permanent
Seemingly resigned to the 2-1/2 hour ordeal of getting a permanent wave put in her hair, this woman sat stoically under the dryer as the permanent wave solution got the heat treatment. She probably left her purse on the table at the hairdresser's work station.
Dave's Help
Utter Contentment
She was so interested in her magazine, she never looked up once, and that was helpful to me. The smile of amusement never left her face, nor did that bulky, well-stuffed purse leave her lap. This was not a beauty shop where one ran into a celebrity. These ladies dressed to please themselves, and no fashion trend could be detected. Available in notepaper packet of twelve different Beauty Parlor drawings.
The Hairset
Her hair was half-rolled up and Dave answered the telephone. It was easy to sketch her without him blocking my view.
Under The Dryer
Another lady who has read all she wishes. She has a pretty good idea that her hair is dry and is awaiting her turn in Dave's chair for a comb-out. She was one of the few that wore some sort of jewelry.
